Navasandhi Talas Chart
Navasandhi Talas are 9 Talas, used in temples when Navasandhi rituals with Navasandhi Kavuthuvams were performed to propitiate the Devadas or the Deities of different Sandhis (9 Directions / Place), such as, Brahma, Indra, Agni, Yama, Niruthi, Varuna, Vaayu, Kubera, Isha, for protection and purification. Kavuthuvam means hymn. It is also called, Kavithuvam or kauttuvam. Navasandhi Kavuthuvam is also an invocatory item in Bharathanatyam and Kuchipudi. Classical Dance performances such as Bharatanatyam, Kuchupudi, take place during the Navasandhi rituals. Navasandhi rituals are performed on the occasion of the Dhwajaarohana festivals, Brahmotsavam, and other major Utsavams in temples.

In the Navasandhi Talas, the Tala angas such as, Dhruta, Laghu, Guru and Pluta are used. Dhruta is 2 counts, Pluta is 12 counts and Guru is 8 counts. Laghu is of Chatusra Jaathi and so, Laghu is 4 counts. Please Note: Spellings of the "technical names", for example, "Dhrutham" and "Dhruta", "Pluta" and "Plutham" convey the same meaning only.
